Dangerous Side Effects of Ambien (Part A)

Ambien is a prescription medication that is commonly prescribed to treat insomnia. When used properly under a doctor’s care, it creates a chemical release in the brain that induces relaxation and helps the user fall asleep. Generally, Ambien use is safe, but many patients have found themselves affected by the drug’s dangerous side effects.

General Guidelines to Prevent Ambien Side Effects

The Ambien medication information your doctor or pharmacist should provide includes guidelines on what to expect when taking Ambien and what sorts of activities to avoid. You should take Ambien only as your doctor has prescribed and follow dosage rules completely. Ambien should only be taken during normal sleep schedules where you have a 7-8 hour period to dedicate to sleep. Ambien side effects include a lingering feeling of tiredness in the morning, and it is advised that you allow yourself to become fully alert and awake before driving or operating heavy machinery. It is also advised that you do not drink alcohol, as it may increase the Ambien side effects.

Allergic Reactions That Result in Ambien Side Effects

Your prescribing doctor should be aware of your medical history regarding your allergies to medications. A careful review of the other medications you are currently taking should be performed to make sure that Ambien will not react with any other medications. If your doctor does not perform these reviews and you suffer an allergic reaction that could have been prevented, you may be able to file a medical malpractice claim against your doctor.  If you experience any of the typical signs of an allergic reaction when you begin taking Ambien, you should contact your doctor immediately.

Signs of an allergic reaction from Ambien side effects include:

  • hives;
  • rapid heartbeat;
  • fever;
  • flushed skin;
  • swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat; and
  • difficulty breathing.

If your symptoms are severe, seek immediate medical attention. You’ll need to make sure your emergency doctors are aware of all the medications you are taking, including Ambien.  Continue to Next Page >>
