Salsa Sold in Dollar Store Contains Large Pieces of Glass; Recalled Nationwide

The saying goes, “you get what you pay for.” Well, for the potential customer shopping at Dollar Tree and Deals, Dollar Express, and Dollar Bills stores across the nation, you might want to avoid the salsa.

The maker of salsa sold at all three of these dollar stores is recalling their product all across the nation after discovering some jars contained large pieces of glass.

Roxana Janka, a company spokeswoman, says that the glass got into the salsa at the beginning stages of manufacturing, when some of the glass jars were damaged and broken.

Since the X-rays at the manufacturing plant are programmed to detect small shards of glass, the large pieces slipped by, undetected.

Although there have not yet been any reported injuries, Fresno, California-based Olam Tomato Processors Inc. announced the recall this past Tuesday, to avoid any potential future injuries, after three people reported the glass.

The recall applies to the Mild Chunky Salsa with best-by dates of June 2015 and October 2015, as well as the Medium Chunky Salsa with a best-by date of July 2015.

In a press released posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) website, the company said, “due to the popularity of the product and proactive measures that have been taken, it is believed that no product remains in retail distribution. For this reason, consumers are asked to examine their refrigerator and pantry for specific packages of Mild Chunky Salsa, UPC 3927759137, production codes L12142 (Best By Date June 2015) and L04093 (Best By Date October 2015) and Medium Chunky Salsa, UPC 3927759139, production code L01313 (Best By Date July 2015). To locate the production code, consumers should look on the glass jar itself below the cap and above the label…

Consumers who may have purchased the recalled Chunky Salsa should not consume the product, but instead should return it to the store for a full refund.

Olam Tomato Processors is dedicated to product quality, and the healthy and safety of its consumers. Fore these reasons, Olam Tomato Processors has voluntarily initiated this recall. We apologize to consumers and sincerely regret any inconvenience created by this voluntary product recall.”
