The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investing airbag problems among some Suzuki SUVs. According to a report, some airbag sensors in the seats of these SUVs are being turned off when a child is sitting in the chair. In other instances, the sensors won’t detect a child, and the airbags could inflate, potentially killing the child. There also have been instances where the warning lights go off due to software problems.
Although the safety agency hasn’t received any complaints about crashes or injuries, they are still probing over 205,000 as a precaution. The probe covers Grand Vitaras from the 2006 through 2011 models, as well as SX4s from 2007 through 2011.
So far, there have been 128 owners who have complained about problems with the front passenger seat airbag problems, according to the NHTSA website. Investigators are currently looking into whether these problems are serious enough to cause a full-out recall.
American Suzuki Motor Corp. said that they would stop selling automobiles in the United States back in November, when they filed for bankruptcy protection as part of a plan to restructure its business. The Brea, California-based company is the only continental-U.S. distributor of Suzuki Motor Co. vehicles, and claims to have enough cash to operate during the restructuring process. The company has also stated that it intends to honor all car warranties.
