The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced serious risks associated with steroid injections in the neck and back. Researchers and safety advocates have been asking the FDA to act on these dangers for years.
As far back as 2007, reports of severe adverse events started emerging, according to media reports. Some of the most serious injuries include a loss of vision and paralysis. The injections were also linked to 13 deaths, reported an article in the journal Spine.
But it wasn’t until 2011 the FDA started to study these safety concerns. Although the FDA has now issued warnings, it hasn’t gone as far as restricting their use. The agency is still investigating the risks associated with the injections.
