Approximately 1.8 million pounds of ground beef have been recalled, since the beef is suspect for E-coli bacteria contamination.
The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service made the announcement Monday. The recall covers beef from Wolverine Packing Company in Detroit, Michigan.
Affected products were made between March 13th and April 18th. The products subject to the recall include the number “EST. 2574B” and will have a production date code in the format “Packing Nos: MMDD 14” between “03 31 14” and “04 18 14.”
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service says at least six retailers across ten states may have sold the beef. The list of retailers includes major grocery chain Gordon Food Service Marketplace or GFS. The meat was sent to stores in Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
There are 11 confirmed cases of illness.
A lawsuit has been filed in Kalamazoo County on behalf of a college student who was hospitalized with an E.coli infection linked to the nationwide recall of ground beef from Wolverine Packing Company.
The complaint states the student ate ground beef from a restaurant in Farmington, Michigan, as well as at least one other location. The complaint also says that the ground beef she ate at one or more of those restaurants was manufactured by Wolverine Packing Company.
Once she was admitted to the hospital, the student received treatment for six days before returning home. The complaint says she still has not returned to full health and “continues to suffer from weakness and gastrointestinal discomfort on a regular basis.”
E.coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps 2-8 days (3-4 days on average) after exposure to the organism.
While most people recover within one week, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic syndrome (HUS).
The Wolverine Packing Company says that no product tested positive, but it is being “prudent” with the voluntary recall and re-doubling efforts to assure “safety standards exceed customers’ expectations.”
