November 18, 2010 – Westbury, NY – The New York Daily News reports that an off-duty New York City police officer was killed in a Long Island car accident. Police officer Fred Barraza, 33, was killed on Thursday, November 11 at approximately 2 a.m., when he lost control of his Honda Accord on Carmen Avenue and slammed into a tree. According to Nassau County police, he was on his way home after work when he swerved in front of another car and ran off the road. Barraza worked as a police officer in the 110th Precinct in Queens and is survived by a wife and child. Passenger Jose Valdevenito, 35, who is also a cousin of Barraza’s, was ejected from the vehicle. He has been admitted to Nassau University Medical Center with serious head trauma. Police are still investigating to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash but say that Barraza was speeding. According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 1,156 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in the state of New York in 2009.
