Following communications with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals has initiated a voluntary recall of 2 prescription pain killers because of a risk of serious heart damage that could result in death. The 2 drugs in question, Darvon and Darvocet, have been recalled because they contain propoxyphene as the active ingredient. Drugs containing propoxyphene have been found to cause serious heart damage, including fatal heart arrhythmias, even when taken in the recommended doses. According to Dr. John Jenkins, director of the Office of New Drugs at the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) in the FDA, recent data concerning propoxyphene dramatically changes the drug’s risk-benefit profile as a prescription medication. He went on to say that the potential to reduce pain is no longer worth the severe risk of increased heart problems in patients. The FDA has mandated that all drug manufacturers recall any drug containing propoxyphene and cease to produce any “drugs of this kind.” If you have been injured, become ill or lost a loved one because of the use of a defective or recalled pharmaceutical, you deserve compensation for your suffering.
