December 3, 2010 – Long Island, NY – According to the news website Greenwichtime.com, a Bronx man has been formally charged with drunk driving after killing someone in an accident on a Long Island highway. The man, Edverardo Nieto, was drag racing on Tuesday, November 30, when he careened into oncoming traffic and collided with a car that was driven by an 86-year-old man and his wife. The 86-year-old man was killed as a result of the car accident and his 84-year-old wife was injured. At the November 30 arraignment, Assistant District Attorney Katherine Breazier said that shortly after the accident, police discovered a bottle of vodka in Nieto’s truck. The bottle was almost completely empty. Accordingly, Nieto was arraigned on charges of driving while intoxicated, aggravated vehicular homicide, and manslaughter as well as other charges. Nieto was ordered to jail on a $500,000 bond or $250,000 cash bail. According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2009, there were 1,156 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in the state of New York.
