Global Study Indicates Up to 25% of Mesothelioma Cases Are Not Reported

March 18, 2011 – A recent study reported by Environmental Health Perspectives indicates that one in every 4 or 5 cases of mesothelioma goes unreported, particularly in developing countries.  The study, Global Magnitude of Reported and Unreported Mesothelioma, was conducted by health professionals in institutes in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Taiwan.  Mesothelioma, caused by asbestos exposure, may take decades to develop. The study reviewed data from 56 countries on asbestos usage and mesothelioma deaths.  Researchers found that more than 174,000 mesothelioma deaths were reported between 1994 and 2008 in those 56 countries.  The study also assessed data from 33 additional countries for which there was asbestos usage information but no statistical information on mesothelioma cancer or deaths.  The researchers estimated that 38,900 mesothelioma deaths had occurred in those 33 countries between 1994 and 2008. Global Magnitude of Reported and Unreported Mesothelioma concluded that approximately 25% of mesothelioma cases are overlooked and unreported.  Researches warn that many countries with greater asbestos usage should expect a higher incidence of asbestos-related diseases in the years ahead. While any new asbestos use in the United States has been prohibited for more than 2 decades, symptoms can take years to surface. When you begin to have symptoms of asbestos exposure, you’ll want to seek medical attention and consult with an asbestos lawyer about your options.
