March 25, 2011 – Biotab Nutracruticals Inc. was recently made aware by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) that two lots of counterfeit Extenze nutritional supplement tablets were produced and distributed under their brand name. The press release from the FDA reports that the affected lots were not only wrongfully distributed under the Biotab brand, but they also contain undeclared drug ingredients that can pose serious health risks. The Extenze product is sold as a male enhancement supplement to treat erectile dysfunction. The undeclared drugs found in the counterfeit lots include sibutramine, which was withdrawn from the market in October 2010 for safety risks related to blood pressure and pulse rates. The other two drugs, tadalafil and sildenafil may interact with nitrates in some other prescription drugs and also cause dangerously low blood pressure. The affected lots are #0709241 which was sold at retailers nationwide as a carded 4-pack of tablets and #0509075, which was sold as a box of 30 tablets on 2 15-tablet blister packs. The first lot contained the unlabeled amounts of tadalafil and sildenafil and the second lot contained unlabeled amounts of tadalafil and sibutramine. These counterfeit lots were not produced, distributed or packaged by Biotab but share the same lot numbers as legitimate Extenze products.
