May 24, 2011 – Manhattan, N.Y. – NBC New York reports that a tour bus driver who was under the influence of alcohol struck and killed a pedestrian in Manhattan. The fatal Manhattan pedestrian accident took place on Saturday, May 7 at about 10 p.m., when the victim was trying to cross Ninth Avenue at 47th Street. Steve Drappel, 57, of West Palm Beach, Fla., was driving the Travel Lynx tour bus that had passengers on board at the time of the pedestrian accident. None of the passengers were injured. Drappel was immediately arrested and charged with DUI and vehicular manslaughter. Timothy White, 29, of Oak Lane Avenue in Philadelphia, was found underneath the tour bus severely injured and nonresponsive. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2009, there were 1,156 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in the state of New York.
