Louisville, KY– An ex-caregiver who was convicted of group home abuse of 3 mentally handicapped residents in Carter County was given a 9-year prison sentence on Thursday, May 26, as Lexington Herald-Leader has reported. According to the office of the attorney general, Jack Conway, 55-year-old Robert Thompson of Ironton, Ohio, was employed at Community Presence. He’s one of 11 ex-employees charged since 2008 in connection with abuse at the group home, which has since been shut down. Back in September 2007, Thompson, along with Michael Yates, restrained Michael Price, 25, a mentally disabled man who had lived in the group home. Both men held Price and kept him pinned down for 90 minutes, prosecutors said. Both were convicted in March following a week-long trial on abuse charges. Additionally, Thompson pleaded guilty to abuse charges in 2007 when he slammed Price’s head on a car and threw another resident to the floor, improperly restraining her. He also pleaded guilty in another case involving a resident whom he intimidated and confined, the attorney general’s office stated. Yates has not yet been sentenced. Price, who had cerebral palsy, died in October 2007 after another caregiver, Matthew Bortles, lay on top of his back for at least 30 minutes. Bortles was given an 8-year prison sentence in 2009.
