August 4, 2011 – Long Island, New York – In a report from Eyewitness News WABC-TV New York, NY, a multi-vehicle car accident on Long Island sends a bus into a McDonald’s restaurant. The accident occurred on Sunday, July 24, at approximately 9:30 p.m. Richard Santiago, 42, was traveling east in his van on Hempstead Turnpike when he collided into 2 cars and then a bus. The crash resulted in the bus slamming into the side of a McDonald’s restaurant. The unidentified 51-year-old driver of the bus had no passengers. No one inside the restaurant was injured; however, the bus driver did suffer serious personal injuries to the face and knees. Santiago was treated for a head injury and a driver in one of the vehicles he crashed into was also transported to a hospital. That driver’s injuries aren’t known at this time. After an investigation Santiago was charged with DWI, driving without a license and a suspended registration, along with driving an uninsured car. According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2009, there were 1,156 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in New York.
