August 4, 2011 – Long Island, New York – According to a report from Eyewitness News WABC-TV New York, NY, a pedestrian was killed by a drunk driver on Long Island. The tragic pedestrian accident took place at around 6 a.m. Monday, July 25, on Route 110, near Ritter Avenue, in North Amityville. Richard Hughes, 49, of East Islip, was under the influence of alcohol when his 2002 Lincoln Continental struck 2 pedestrians. Merell Jerman, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Breuton Byrd, 18, was transported to Nassau University Medical Center where he is listed in serious condition. Hughes has been charged with driving while intoxicated.
