August 5, 2011 – White Plains, NY – According to the Wall Street Journal, a woman drove the wrong direction, for over 6 miles, on I-95 where she eventually caused a collision upon meeting traffic further down the roadway. The driver is suspected of DUI and has been revealed as Tanisha Gomez, age 26 from Queens, NY. Gomez has been charged with second-degree manslaughter after the collision between her vehicle and another which resulted in the death of a man. Gomez suffered mild injuries as well and was taken to Jacobi Medical Center for treatment; her condition is currently progressing. Gomez’s New York personal injury attorney, Salvatore Paszynsky relays to officials that Gomez intends to plead not guilty due to her previously clean driving record. Gomez’s attorney also reported that the district attorney’s office had conducted drug tests that are still pending. This New York accident bears eerie resemblance to an accident that occurred 2 years ago where 8 were killed on the Taconic Parkway that was also caused by wrong-way driving. According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2009, there were 1,156 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in New York.
