August 17, 2011 – Long Island, New York – According to a report from Eyewitness News WABC-TV New York, NY, an off-duty Suffolk County police sergeant was killed in a single-vehicle car accident on Long Island. The tragic single-vehicle car crash took place on Saturday, August 6, at approximately 5:30 a.m. Detective Sgt. Robert Reecks, 57, of Suffolk County, was driving his department-issued Sedan when he went off the Sunrise Highway, in Moriches, and struck a concrete bridge support. Reecks had been with the police force since 1981 and was elected commander of the bias-crimes unit in the 1990’s. He led that unit until a command shake-up in January.
