Vaping Epidemic Facing Kids Today

In a 2018 advisory, the US Surgeon General declared youth vaping an epidemic, specifically calling out electronic cigarette giant Juul™ as part of the problem.

E-cigarettes are rapidly changing with the times, and are known by different names, including “e-cigs,” “ehookahs,” “mods,” “pods, ” “vapes,” and “vape pens.”

Recently, a new type of e-cigarette has become increasingly popular among kids due to its minimal vapor, minimal odor, kid-friendly flavors, and small size, making it easy to hide. Many of these new e-cigarettes look like a USB flash drive, among other shapes.

One of the most commonly sold USB flash drive shaped e-cigarettes is JUUL™, which experienced a 600% surge in sales during 2016-2017, giving it the greatest market share of any e-cigarette in the U.S. by the end of 2017. Other companies are now also starting to sell e-cigarettes that look like USB flash drives.

Stanford Research looked into the Impact of Tobacco Advertising and shared their study of the company’s marketing campaign between Juul’s™ launch in 2015 and fall 2018. They looked at thousands of Instagram posts, emails, and ads, and came to this searing conclusion: Juul’s™ marketing “was patently youth-oriented.”

“Vape juice”, the flavored oils that are processed through popular vape devices like the JUUL™, is not only loaded with nicotine but comes in flavors that appeal to very young people, some as young as 12 years old.

As a result of its easy use and minimal odor, the JUUL™ and similar vape devices have become extremely popular with teens and young people. Many times, parents may be unaware that their child is vaping.
