On July 1st, California’s State Assembly approved a bill that would ban the use of a substance in baby bottles, sippy cups, and other products intended for young children 3 years old and younger.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Fran Paveley (D-Agoura Hills), would prohibit bisphenol A (or BPA), which has been used for decades to harden plastics used to many food and beverage containers.
California becomes the eighth state to ban BPA in children’s products, joining Minnesota, Maryland, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Washington, Vermont, and New York.
In 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency added BPA to its list of “chemicals of concern”, and legislators in as many as 30 states have tried to pass similar bills. It has been estimated by experts that BPA can be found in the bodies of over 90 percent of the U.S. and European population, so this ban could come as good news if BPA turns out to cause the side effects linked to the chemical.
