In a report from Reuters, the FDA has issued a warning concerning an MS drug that may lead to seizures. The drug, Amprya, manufactured by Biogen Inc. and Acorda Therapeutics Inc., is designed to improve symptoms to make walking easier.
However, it is also found to increase the risk of seizures in patients with multiple sclerosis. As a result, the manufacturer has updated their label to warn patients. It also warns that individuals taking the drug should have their kidney function checked before taking it and then on a yearly basis once they have begun treatment with the drug.
Drug Labeling Requirements
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates drugs to make sure they comply with appropriate standards, including requirements pertaining to labels. This means that the label must clearly and accurately state what the drug is intended for.
In addition, if there is health risks to consumers, warnings must also be provided on the label. Missing or misleading information could lead the FDA to issue an alert for the drug. In some cases, it may even result in the drug being pulled.
