The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a recall on thousands of Graco Classic Wood Highchairs with seats that may loosen or detach, resulting in a fall hazard. There were 86,000 of these highchairs sold in the United States and 3,400 in Canada. A defective product attorney can help residents in New York or elsewhere if their children have been affected.
These highchairs, manufactured by Graco Children’s Products Inc., of Atlanta, were sold at Burlington Coat Factory, Babies R Us and other retailers for about $130. They were also sold nationwide by online retailers such as Walmart and Target.
The classic wood highchairs were sold in three wood finishes. The fabric seat covers are beige and come with a removable tray. The nearly 90,000 recalled units were manufactured in China.
The CPSC reported that there have been 58 complaints of the seats on the highchair detaching or loosening from the base. There have been nine reports of children falling out of the highchair. Most suffered scratches, bruises and bumps. However, a child in Canada sustained a concussion.
Consumers are advised to stop using the product immediately. They should contact Graco at 1-800-345-4109 in order to receive a free repair kit.
Last year, CPSC released a report, “Nursery Product-Related Injuries and Deaths among Children under Age Five.” In 2010, there were approximately 81,700 injuries to children younger than 5 years old that were treated in an emergency department. Of those, 11,500 were related to the use of a highchair.
