November 5, 2012 – Queens, N.Y. – NBC New York reported that a man was struck and killed in a Queens hit-and-run accident. Police have not identified the victim who was fatally injured on Saturday morning, Oct. 20. They also have not made any arrests and continue to investigate.
What is known is that the man was on a sidewalk when a 2007 Toyota Rav4 jumped the curb and hit him. The car was headed south on 164th Street near Booth Memorial Avenue when the crash occurred.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2010 there were 4,280 pedestrians killed in a traffic crash and about 70,000 were injured. AAA Foundation notes that the majority of individuals killed by hit-and-run drivers are pedestrians, and about 20 percent of pedestrian fatalities are attributed to hit-and-run accidents.
According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2010, there were 1,200 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in the state of New York.
