November 29, 2010 – New York – What was supposed to be a simple surgical procedure became a nightmare for a Brooklyn mother. Two years ago, Stacey Galette went to her doctor for a gynecological surgery; today she is a double amputee with partial hearing loss. Galette, a medical technician, has stated that she was in perfect health before she walked into Winthrop University Hospital 2 years ago. According to Galette, surgeons punctured her intestine during what was supposed to be a simple procedure with a one-day hospital stay. This puncture led to an infection that caused blood poisoning and gangrene in her lower legs. The infection has also resulted in Gallette’s permanent partial loss of hearing. Galette was in a 3-week medically induced coma following this medical error. Now she is suing the hospital for an unspecified amount. Galette filed her medical malpractice lawsuit on November 18, 2010. Since the botched surgery, Galette says she has been living in constant pain. On top of this, she is caring for her 10-year-old daughter, negotiating a divorce and living on disability benefits, as she has been unable to work. “I have prosthetics, and I’m just starting to walk. It’s very painful, but I’m trying. It’s very hard,” Galette said. If you have suffered the terrible results of a surgical error or other form of medical negligence, you may be able to file a medical malpractice lawsuit.
