December 9, 2010 – North Haven, CT – A nursing home in North Haven is currently under state and federal scrutiny following complaints, Connecticut Health I-Team has reported. After an inspection by state officials, Clintonville Manor has been placed on a federal list of troubled, “special focus” facilities. On top of a host of other deficiencies, state inspectors found that many residents at Clintonville Manor complained of mistreatment and neglect by top administrators. Clintonville Manor has been cited for, among other things, a failure to provide residents “with basic necessities, such as meals and snacks, with reasonable accommodation of their needs.” Clintonville had also failed to treat residents with dignity or respect.
The assistant administrator was once heard saying bluntly to a resident, “You stink. Get in the shower.” For at least the last 2 years, even residents with ambulatory disabilities were not permitted to eat meals or snacks in the comfort of their own rooms. This was apparently because the administrator “did not want spills or crumbs in the rooms.” The inspection even found that the nursing home had been restricting residents’ access to their personal funds. Following the inspection, Clintonville Manor suspended its administrator and assistant administrator. A new administrator has been hired. Furthermore, the nursing home submitted a detailed plan of correction in an attempt to right its many cited wrongs. The owners of Clintonville Manor made a point to note that the plan of correction was in no way an admission of fault on the part of the nursing home. Clintonville Manor had already been cited for several deficiencies and fined $2,500 in December 2009.
