November 29, 2010 – CVS has initiated a voluntary recall of one line of its reusable grocery bags as a precaution against a possible lead poisoning risk, Examiner.com reports. Only one type of reusable bag is affected by this recall: the 99 cent green, square CVS reusable grocery bag made of a woven, mesh-like material. The paint on the bags has been found to contain unsafe levels of lead. Though officials from CVS have thus far declined to give an exact figure concerning the lead levels in the bags, recent tests have found that the lead levels are greater than 100 parts per million. Federal laws state that paint on consumer products may not exceed a lead level of 90 parts per million.
The agencies in charge of investigations into lead levels in reusable grocery bags include:
- The Food and Drug Administration;
- The Environmental Protection Agency; and
- The Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The affected shopping bags were manufactured in China and sold in grocery stores nationwide. Officials have made a point to note that there “may be no immediate danger to human health” associated with the grocery bags. But because the bags come in direct contact with food, it is highly probable that adverse health effects could result from consuming food that has sustained long-term contact with the bags. If you have been injured or have become ill from the use of a defective or recalled product, it would be in your best interest to contact a product liability lawyer today.
