Two types of hip implant systems, manufactured by DePuy Orthopaedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson, have been recalled due to dangerous defects. The two recalled hip implants are the DePuy ASR™ (Articular Surface Replacement) Hip Resurfacing System and the ASR™ XL Acetabular System total hip replacement.
The DePuy hip implant recalls are based on defects that are causing the hips to fail in as little as five years. Artificial hip implant systems are meant to last for a minimum of 15 years.
When an artificial hip fails, the patient will experience severe pain and difficulty walking. He or she will need to have additional surgery to remove the faulty hip implant and replace it with a new hip. The process is called hip replacement surgery. Hip replacement surgery is usually expensive and debilitating.
If you or someone you love has needed additional surgery because of a failed hip implant, you can seek compensation from the manufacturer. To find out if you qualify, contact a qualified attorney at Gacovino, Lake & Associates today.
DePuy Hip Replacement Defect Information
Approximately 12 percent of patients who received an ASR™ resurfacing device and 13 percent of those who received the ASR™ total hip replacement will require revision surgery, according to data. The DePuy ASR™ XL Acetabular System has been sold worldwide and the ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System has only been sold outside the U.S.
Thousands of patients have received the faulty hip systems. Problems with the systems include:
- Loose cups
- Shreds of metal entering the body because of the metal-on-metal design
Some doctors have also reported that the cup component of the DePuy ASR™ XL Acetabular System is too shallow, which makes it difficult to install properly. This design flaw, say the doctors, has caused health complications in some patients.
