Hair Product System Contains Dangerous Levels of Formaldehyde

Products that contain dangerous chemicals could jeopardize one’s health. This appears to be a risk in a permanent hair-straightening system used by professional hairstylists. Researchers recently found Brazilian Blowout Açai Professional Smoothing Hair Solution contains formaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen.

As a result, the product may have exposed both hairstylists and customers to dangerous levels of the chemical. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) enforces limits on the amount of formaldehyde that products may contain, which is no more than 0.1 percent. Researchers found the hair solution contains 12 percent. The study is in the August issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene.

Dangers of Formaldehyde in Consumer Products

Formaldehyde exposure could cause problems with the upper respiratory tract. This may include the nasal passage and throat. Research also indicates there could be an increased risk of leukemia.

Although less serious, some people exposed to formaldehyde experience uncomfortable side effects such as:

  • nosebleeds;
  • skin irritation;
  • nausea; and
  • wheezing.

The greater the exposure to formaldehyde, the higher the chance of serious health problems. Clearly this could be an issue for hairstylists. But it may possibly be a concern for customers who regularly use this system.
