Several studies have been conducted linking combined estrogen plus progestin Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to increased risk of breast cancer. Studies performed at Stanford University School of Medicine and other Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) confirmed that combined estrogen plus progestin hormone replacement therapy (HRT) increased the risk of breast cancer. It is proven that post-menopausal women who take these HRT for at least five years are doubling their risk of breast cancer. WHI data also showed that women can quickly reduce their risk of breast cancer by stopping HRT. After the 2002 report from the WHI trial linking estrogen and progestin HRT use to breast cancer, there was a dramatic drop in HRT use in the US fro 60 million prescriptions in 2001 to 20 million prescriptions in 2005. This was followed by a reduction in rates of breast cancer detection, which suggests that stopping HRT reduced breast cancer risk.
