Lowe’s Stores to Add to Roman Shades & Roll-Up Blinds Recalls

December 6, 2010 – Following communications with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Lowe’s Stores has joined a growing list of retailers to voluntarily recall all Roman shades and roll-up blinds.  As with the other recalls, the affected shades and blinds pose a strangulation hazard to children. With the Roman shades, strangulation is likely to occur if the child’s neck becomes caught between the exposed inner cord and the backside of the blind or if the pull-cord becomes wrapped around the child’s neck. With the roll-up blinds, strangulation is likely to occur if the child’s neck becomes caught in the free-standing loop or between the lifting loop and roll-up blind material.  The CPSC has so far received 2 reports of incidents in which children were caught in the exposed cords while attempting to look out a window. In one incident, a 2-year-old boy was found with his arm and neck entangled in the cord. In the second incident, a 4-year-old boy suffered rope burn on his neck after being caught in the cord of a Roman shade.  This recall by Lowe’s Stores adds about 6 million Roman shades and about 5 million roll-up blinds to those already recalled by other retailers. The recall affects all styles of Roman shades and roll-up blinds sold at all Lowe’s Stores.  Consumers are advised to cease use of the defective shades and blinds immediately and contact the Window Covering Safety Council for a free repair kit.
