December 13, 2010 – Maytag Corp., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), has initiated a voluntary safety recall of its dishwashers because of a fire hazard. As a result of an electrical defect, the dishwashers may suddenly catch fire. This poses a burn risk to the consumer, as well as a risk of damage to the home. Maytag has so far received 12 reports in which the heating element within the dishwasher caught on fire. These incidents have all resulted in property damage. There have been no injuries reported. The brands of dishwashers affected by this recall include:
- Maytag;
- Amana;
- Jenn-Air;
- Admiral;
- Magic Chef;
- Performa; and
- Crosley.
The affected dishwashers have a plastic tub and came with a variety of different colored front panels, including black, bisque, white, silver and stainless steel. The following serial numbers were affected by this recall:
- codes beginning with NW39 through NW52;
- codes beginning with NY01 through NY19; and
- codes ending with JC, JE, JG, JJ, JL, JN, JP, JR, JT, JV, JX, LA, LC, LE, LG, LJ, LL, LN, LP, LR, LT, LV, LX, NA, NC, NE, NG, NJ, NL, NN, NP or NR.
This recall affects approximately 1.7 million dishwashers. The recalled dishwashers were sold at department stores nationwide and by homebuilders between February 2006 and April 2010. Consumers are advised to disconnect the dishwashers from the power supply immediately and contact Maytag Corp. for the choice of a free in-home repair or a $150 to $250 rebate toward the purchase of a new dishwasher.
