March 1, 2011 – New York City, NY – An unidentified motorcyclist suffered critical injuries after his bike ended up pinned underneath one of 3 transit busses involved in an early morning crash on February 24. The New York Post reports that the 7:26 a.m. crash took place inside the Manhattan-bound center tube of the popular Lincoln Tunnel. According to footage from surveillance video, the crash was initiated when a transit bus braked for traffic and a second transit bus struck the first, pushing the first bus into the motorcycle, which was just ahead of the bus. The video footage also showed that the motorcyclist may have been changing lanes just prior to the crash. News reports have not made clear the role of the third bus involved in the crash. The accident blocked traffic in the center tube all morning as investigators and emergency crews worked to review the scene and perform clean-up. A total of 52 passengers on the 3 busses complained of injuries, 14 of them serious. Injured passengers were taken to Roosevelt Hospital for treatment. The motorcyclist was listed in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital at last reporting. Traffic had to be diverted to the Secaucus Junction Rail Station, Newark Penn Station and Hoboken Terminal. The lanes in and out of New York City remained open but commuters experienced long delays.
