November 23, 2010 – Medimex, in cooperation with the Health Sciences Authority (HSA), has initiated a voluntary recall of an antiseptic mouthwash because of the presence of a potentially harmful contaminant, The Straits Times reports. The product, OralGuard Antiseptic-Antiplaque Mouthwash, has been found to contain the bacteria Burkholderia cepacia. Experts say that the bacteria should not cause any great harm to the average, healthy person. However, people with a weakened immune system could suffer a pneumonia-like lung infection upon ingestion of the bacteria. Burkholderia Cepacia can be especially deadly in a hospital setting, where people have especially low immune systems, or in people who have preexisting lung conditions.
The following batches of mouthwash have been affected by this recall:
- 060813;
- 070813; and
- 080813.
Medimex, the product’s distributor, has declined to give an estimate as to how many units of the product have been affected by the recall. The infection-causing mouthwash was manufactured by Group Pharmaceuticals in India and sold nationwide through Medimex.
