February 3, 2011 – According to Michigan State University’s news website news.msu, more than 20% of nursing home residents in Michigan are neglected. This is according to a study conducted by Michigan State University researchers, who are calling for changes to the nursing care system to address this serious problem. The study examines the risk factors of nursing home neglect, and is based upon inquiries with the family members of nursing home residents. According to the results of the study, more than 1 in 5 nursing home residents were neglected in the past year. And because family members cannot be aware of every incident of neglect, the researches assume that the percentage of neglect is much higher than suspected. The results of the study appeared in the January issue of the Journal of Elder Abuse and Neglect. To help address this issue and improve nursing home care, the MSU researchers have suggested steps such as:
- the better training of nursing care professionals;
- better reporting of nursing care neglect;
- careful assessments of the needs and limitations of nursing home clientele; and
- the education of family members on signs of nursing home neglect.
