December 21, 2011 – According to CBS News, a woman was killed in an elevator in a New York City building with previous elevator violations. A 41-year-old advertising executive, who worked in the building near Grand Central Terminal, was killed on Wednesday, Dec. 14, at approximately 10 a.m. She worked for Young & Rubicam, which is inside the 26-story office tower. According to authorities, as the victim was exiting the elevator, her foot (or leg) caught between the doors while they were closing. The elevator car then continued on its ascent to the upstairs floors, which resulted in the machine dragging her body into the elevator shaft. She died as a result. There were 2 passengers inside the elevator who had to be treated at a hospital for psychological trauma but no one else was physically hurt. There are reports that the building had prior elevator violations but it’s unclear if the elevator that killed the woman was is one of the units that has a violation record. When serious or fatal injuries happen on someone else’s property, they may be held liable. To determine the validity of a claim, you would need to speak with a New York premises liability attorney to learn if there may be legal actions available for you to pursue.
